Is online gambling legal in Tanzania?
In mainland Tanzania online sports betting, casino and virtual games are legal on sites licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania, from age 18. The operator takes 15% tax off every winning before paying you, with no tax-free amount (from 1 July 2026). Every gambling advert must be approved by the Board, so a site advertising without a licence is a warning sign.

What's legal online in Tanzania: casino and sports betting
Sports betting
Licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT), which lists 34 online sports-betting licences. The operator withholds a 15% tax from each winning it pays you. You must be 18 or over.1
Online casino
Licensed by the GBT, which lists 29 online casino licences. Every game must be tested by an accredited laboratory and approved by the Board before a site offers it. Winnings are taxed at 15%, withheld by the operator when it pays you.2
Virtual games
Licensed online by the GBT, which lists one online virtual-games licence. Winnings are taxed at 15%, withheld by the operator.3
Lottery
The national lottery is run by Ithuba Tanzania, appointed by the Board. SMS lotteries are licensed separately, and the GBT lists two SMS-lottery holders.4
Slots
Slot machines are licensed for land-based venues. The GBT has temporarily halted new slot machine and route-operation licences while it builds an electronic monitoring system.5
Poker
There is no licence for poker rooms, where players play each other. Licensed sites offer live-dealer poker, such as Casino Hold'em, where you play against the house, as a casino table game under their online casino licence. The rules do not name live-dealer games, and the Board has not said anything about them.6

You must be 18 to gamble online in Tanzania, for online casino, sports betting and lottery alike.
Tax on winnings: 15%
- Tax on winnings: 15%. Withheld by the operator on each winning paid; no tax-free threshold ↗
The licensee withholds the tax when it pays each winning and remits it by the seventh day of the following month. Gaming Act R.E. 2023 s. 34(1) sets 15%; the Finance Act 2025 s. 41(a) set 12% for sports betting (from 10%) and 13% for land-based casino (from 12%) from 1 July 2025, and earmarked part of those two collections for the AIDS Trust Fund and the Universal Health Insurance Fund. The Finance Act 2026 s. 16 deleted s. 34(2) from 1 July 2026, so the 15% in s. 34(1) applies to all winnings; the TRA web page still shows the old rates. Winnings so taxed are not liable to income tax.
Rate: 15% on every winning from 1 July 2026 (the 12% sports-betting and 13% land-based casino rates of 1 July 2025 - 30 June 2026 no longer apply); withheld by the operator at payout, no tax-free threshold.

Prominent operators in Tanzania
If a site isn't on the regulator's licensee register, ask the regulator before you play: an unlisted site is usually not licensed here (a register can lag behind a new licence). An unlicensed site is outside the regulator's supervision, so you cannot complain to the regulator about it.
Red flags: how to spot an unlicensed site
- Check the licence
The Gaming Board lists every licensed operator by product, online and land-based. A licensed site shows its licence number and date of issue on its homepage, with a statement that the Board regulates it; a betting site shows them on every page.
- Set your own limits
Licensed operators must let you set a deposit or wager limit; raising or removing it takes effect only after seven days.
- Help: 0800 110 051
The Gaming Board’s toll-free number. Radio adverts must end with it, television adverts with celebrity commentary must mention it, and SMS or electronic adverts over 160 characters must include it.
