Gambling in Hungary: what you need to know

The SZTFH blocks unlicensed sites and payments to them, and can confiscate stakes and prizes in unlicensed games. You must be 18.

Upcoming law change
No change to the gambling rules for players is before Parliament as of 30 October 2026. The government has said it will take up the gambling concessions, but no bill has been published.

Minimum age: 18

You must be 18 to gamble online in Hungary, for online casino, sports betting and lottery alike.

Tax on winnings: none

Winnings from SZTFH-licensed operators are tax-free; winnings from unlicensed sites are outside the exemption; the tax authority's 2023 guidance, marked out of force since 2 May 2026, applied 15% income tax and 13% social contribution tax.

Winnings from operators licensed by the SZTFH are not income. Winnings from an operator without the SZTFH licence fall outside that exemption: the personal income tax rate is 15% and the social contribution tax 13%, which the tax authority's 2023 guidance (marked out of force since 2 May 2026) applied to winnings from a prohibited betting site.

If a site isn't on the regulator's licensee register, ask the regulator before you play: an unlisted site is usually not licensed here (a register can lag behind a new licence). An unlicensed site is outside the regulator's supervision, so you cannot complain to the regulator about it.

Red flags: how to spot an unlicensed site

  • Check the SZTFH register

Licensed sites are listed in the SZTFH's authentic licence register: as of 30 October 2026, tippmixpro.hu, vegas.hu, kaszino.hu and xcasino.hu.

  • Hungarian-language information

A licensed betting site must show in Hungarian its complaint procedure, the 18+ and harm warnings, a Hungarian addiction treatment organisation and the SZTFH's contact details.

  • The green number on the site

Every licensed organiser must show the SZTFH green number, +36 80 205 352, on its website.

  • Limits you can set

Licensed sites must let you set a deposit limit (daily, weekly or monthly), applied within 1 hour, and show your time in play.

Common myths about gambling in Hungary

  • Myth
All online gambling winnings are taxed in Hungary.
    Reality

Winnings from SZTFH-licensed operators are not income. Winnings from unlicensed sites are outside that exemption; the tax authority's 2023 guidance, marked out of force since 2 May 2026, applied 15% income tax and 13% social contribution tax to them.

  • Myth
It's safe to play on any site that accepts Hungarian players.
    Reality

The SZTFH blocks unlicensed sites (5,974 entries on its list on 30 October 2026) and payments to them, and can confiscate stakes and prizes in unlicensed games.

  • Myth

    Reality

It does not change the site's status. The Act fines no player, but stakes and prizes in unlicensed gambling can be confiscated and the tax exemption does not apply.
